Choosing Alignment Over Burnout
Client Transformation Story
A client came to coaching at a significant crossroads in their life after making the difficult decision to leave a role that no longer aligned with their needs, strengths, or aspirations.
Although successful in their position, they found themselves increasingly disengaged by repetitive tasks and struggling to thrive within a traditional work environment. Living with ADHD, they recognised that their natural strengths lay in creativity, problem-solving, connection, and dynamic work rather than routine administration.
At the same time, they were navigating uncertainty about what should come next. While relieved to have stepped away from a role that felt restrictive, they also experienced understandable anxiety about their future, financial stability, and career direction.
During our coaching session, we explored the possibility that these conflicting emotions could coexist. Relief and uncertainty were not signs of making the wrong decision; they were part of the natural process of change and growth.
Together, we identified the client’s desire for a more flexible and fulfilling career that would allow greater freedom, creativity, and autonomy. Rather than focusing solely on finding another job, we explored how they could begin designing a working life that better reflected their values, energy, and strengths.
Areas of Growth
Throughout the coaching process, the client:
Gained clarity about the type of work environment that supports their wellbeing.
Recognised how ADHD influences their work preferences and strengths.
Released feelings of guilt around leaving an unsuitable role.
Developed greater trust in their ability to navigate uncertainty.
Identified support, mentorship, and community as important resources during transition.
Began shifting their focus from fear of the unknown to curiosity about future possibilities.
Outcome
By the end of the session, the client felt more grounded and reassured about the decision they had made. They recognised that choosing a different path was not a failure but an act of self-awareness and courage.
The client committed to exploring new opportunities, seeking support where needed, and allowing themselves patience throughout the transition process rather than expecting immediate answers.
Most importantly, they began viewing this chapter not as an ending, but as the beginning of creating a life and career that genuinely fit who they are.
Reflection
Many people remain in environments that drain their energy because uncertainty feels more frightening than dissatisfaction.
This coaching journey demonstrates the power of listening to your needs, trusting your instincts, and creating space for a future that aligns with your strengths rather than forcing yourself to fit into circumstances that no longer serve you.
“Sometimes the bravest decision is not knowing exactly where you’re going, but trusting yourself enough to leave what no longer fits.”
